Queen Azizah’s Diamond Tiara

Happy Birthday to Queen Azizah of Pahang, the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, who turns 65 today! The beloved Johor Princess who became the inspirational Tengku Ampuan of Pahang and served as the XVI Raja Permaisuri Agong (Queen) of Malaysia, our friend Queen Azizah has a splendid jewellery collection, which includes this spectacular Diamond Tiara!

In the early 1990s, the then Tenkgu Puan (Crown Princess) Azizah of Pahang acquired this striking antique Diamond Tiara at Wolfers in Brussels.

Crown Princess Azizah notably wore the Diamond Tiara for the Installation Ceremony of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan as the 10th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia in 1994.

The Wolfers Diamond Tiara was worn by Crown Princess Azizah for a series of portraits and a few interviews.

In 2017, Crown Princess Azizah wore the Diamond Tiara for the Installation Ceremony for the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia) at the Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur.

Over the years, Queen Azizah has frequently loaned the Tiara to brides in the extended Family, being worn by Tengku Nurul Kamalia at her wedding to Dato Ahmad Najmi in 2008, Tunku Syazwan Kaiyisah at her 2013 wedding to Wan Putera Shahril in 2013, and Puteri Afzan Shakira at her wedding to Khairul Fahmy in 2015.

The Diamond Tiara was loaned to Puteri Suraiya Afzan when she married Tengku Amir Nasser Ibrahim Shah, the elder son of Queen Azizah, in 2013.

Three Diamond Stars were added to the Diamond Tiara for Tengku Puteri Iman Afzan, the elder daughter of the Sultan, for her Wedding to Tengku Dato’ Sri Abu Bakar Ahmad in 2018.

Around that time, the Diamond Tiara was worn by Tengku Puan Azizah for an Official Portrait which was made popular when the couple became the Sultan and Tengku Ampuan of Pahang and then the King and  Queen of Malaysia within a few weeks in January 2019.

Queen Azizah, as the Raja Permaisuri Agong, wore the Diamond Tiara for their first Malaysian Opening of Parliament Ceremony in Kuala Lumpur in 2019, a few months before their Installation Ceremony, after which she wore the Gandik Diraja Tiara.

More recently, Queen Azizah’s Diamond Tiara was worn by her daughter, Tengku Puteri Afzan, for both her Akad Nikah Ceremony and the Majlis Resepsi Perkahwinan’ (Wedding Reception) Ceremony at the Shangri-La in Kuala Lumpur when she married Fateh Idzham bin Fateh Iskandar in Kuantan and Kuala Lumpur.

I saw the Diamond Tiara when I visited Queen Azizah at the Istana Abdul Aziz in Kuantan last year, when I confirmed my discovery of Queen Mary’s lost Diamond Lozenge Bandeau, and it really is a most striking piece. Let’s hope we see the Tiara worn again soon!
