Weapons Starring Julia Garner Is About To Dominate Your Group Chats

It’s a great summer for movies. We’ve had the Freaky Friday reboot, vampire movie Sinners and cynical rom-com Materialists is out this week. But everyone is talking about Weapons.

Starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, it follows both of their characters’ perspectives after 17 children vanish in the middle of the night in a small town. Garner plays a guilt-ridden teacher, while Brolin plays a small-town cop. Film boss Zach Cregger is reportedly already in talks for a Weapons prequel, also.

Here’s everything we know so far about Weapons, including where to watch it.

Where can I watch Weapons?

It is out in cinemas now, and is also available to rent or purchase on Apple TV+

Weapons plot

The plot synopsis for the film reads as follows: “When all but one child from the same classroom mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.”

Weapons cast

The horror movie stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, Amy Madigan, Alden Ehrenreich, and Cary Christopher. Pedro Pascal was originally attached, but pulled out, and the film had a full recast.

Julia Garner has opened up about how much she fell in love with Weapons from the second she read the script.

“I read it in one sitting, and that doesn’t happen often. It was like a real page turner,” she explained in a recent interview. “I was shooting another movie, and I was like, ‘we have to make sure that I have time to do this movie.’ I really felt it in my every fiber. I just loved the script and Zach’s work.”

Weapons release date

The film dropped in cinemas on 8 August.

Is Weapons based on a true story?

While the opening lines from the film reads “this is a true story”, we can confirm its not. It’s just a tool to scare the audience even more.

That said, the film’s creator Cregger has said that he was inspired to make Weapons after his friend’s sudden death back in 2021, and the grief and suspended sense of reality that comes with that.
