There’s nothing like coming across an image of the first fashion week of the season, Copenhagen, to make you crave autumn’s most trendy jackets even though it’s still warm outside. Call it boredom after one of the hottest summers in recent memory or simply a desire to turn over a new leaf. Whatever mood you’re in, even if you’re one of those who dream of living in an eternal summer, our compilation of the first trendy jackets of autumn are the best therapy.
From classics like the barn jacket or the waxed parka, to old acquaintances like the brown suede jacket, or unexpected novelties like the cape trench coat, we have selected all the trendy autumn jackets you won’t stop seeing this season.
The brown suede jacket
The most important jacket of spring 2025, the brown suede jacket, promises to continue to be the most seen, desired and sold jacket of autumn, too; at least judging by its overwhelming presence in the collections of fashion brands of all price points. The way to get it right (but also make the most of the investment this type of jacket usually entails) is to go for a simple, elegant design: the blazer or overshirt, with lapels and large front pockets.
The barn jacket
One of the most recognisable workwear garments in history, the barn jacket is named so because of its use by American farmers and factory workers. Now, it’s more fashionable than ever. This autumn, the utilitarian design (made of resistant materials and even more resistant colours, like brown and black) coexists with more inspired shades, such as green, plum or blue.
The cape trench coat
The cape trench coat is the adaptation of the classic women’s trench coat that nobody saw coming. This season it arrives in traditional beige, but with a twist: a crop cut. The other characteristic details of the garment, such as the collar and contrasting buttons, remain the same. Wear it alone during the first weeks of autumn, or as an additional layer to other warm garments once the temperature requires it. Read more: short trench coats and how to style a trench coat.
The denim jacket with contrast collar
The denim jacket is one of those essential styles but also one of the most underrated, perhaps because we tend to take its presence for granted. It’s not all that usual for brands to pay special attention to this garment, but this autumn they all seem to have agreed. This particular trend is all about the contrasting collar, in materials such as corduroy or leather.
The waxed parka
The favourite of British style icons from Alexa Chung to the late Queen Elizabeth II, the waxed parka coat is hardly new, but it’s one of those garments that peaks in popularity every so often. Since last spring it has been on the rise, so if you’re thinking about buying one, autumn 2025 is the best time because you can find it in most stores. (Of course, for Barbour, the epitome of this style, it is considered a timeless classic.) You can find it in a wide range of prices, colours and designs. The most simple ones remain the most popular, in colours like navy blue, khaki and brown.
