There’s been many plot twists in The Summer I Turned Pretty but the one we didn’t see coming was Belly getting a French-girl crop. The ‘Belly bob’, with its soft face-framing layers, is suddenly going viral as the chic, go-to haircut for autumn but also as the ultimate revenge haircut post breakup.
In the wake of her broken engagement to college sweetheart Jeremiah, Belly Conklin heads to Paris. In the penultimate episode of Series 3, she can be seen sitting in a salon chair, where she tells her hairdresser, “I’m ready for something new this summer.”
After three seasons with long dark hair, that “something new” is the ‘Belly bob’, which hairstylist Christina Beighton from Larry King’s Notting Hill Salon, describes as “the ultimate coming-of-age hair moment. Her French bob, lengthened to just above the shoulders, is a cut that balances youthful softness with a polished edge, much liker her character’s own transformation in this series.”

What should you ask your hairdresser for?
To get the look, Christina recommends asking your hairstylist for “a classic blunt bob with beveled edges that naturally curve inward. This subtle shaping ensures that, when styled with a round brush for a smooth, glossy finish.”

How should you style the ‘Belly bob’?
The real draw of the ‘Belly bob’ is how effortless it is style. “Simply work mousse into damp hair for weightless control and natural body,” says Christina. “Part in the centre, rough-dry the roots to keep them flat, then use a round brush to smooth through lengths and tuck the ends under.”
Finish with a lightweight styling cream to keep flyaways at bay. Christina recommends Larry King’s Flyaway With Me Kit as it also comes with a dual-ended bamboo brush and comb to tame baby hairs. “The result is a glossy, natural finish that feels grown-up but still romantic, like Belly herself.”
