Professor Benedict Ashcombe
House Historian & Legacy Projects Advisor
Professor Ashcombe, of St. John’s College, Oxford, is charged with overseeing Lord’s Press special projects, including The Historical Register and our forthcoming compendium on dormant English viscountcies. A frequent guest at the Royal Historical Society, his lectures are often adapted into longform features.

Why “LP Staff Writer”?

From time to time, Lord’s Press elects to publish under the institutional byline LP Staff Writer. This practice honours a longstanding editorial convention and reflects circumstances where:

• Articles are crafted through collaborative editorial processes, drawing from court circulars, primary documents, and multiple contributors;
• The identity of the contributor must remain confidential, particularly in cases involving royal households, state archives, or legal petitions;
• Pieces are adapted or drawn from the Lord’s Press Historical Register, where anonymity is customary and authorship belongs to the publication rather than the individual.

This byline is not a placeholder, but a mark of editorial trust—denoting collective authorship, verified research, and a standard of excellence.
