Galas of the Reign of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg

We are looking at some of the most magnificent Galas from the Reign of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, which will end with his Abdication tomorrow! The 25-year Reign has been marked by glittering Galas to celebrate Anniversaries and Weddings, as well as magnificent State Banquets at home and abroad!

The Accession Ceremony of Grand Duke Henri in October 2000 happened with minimal ceremony due to a series accident involving his brother and sister-in-law just a few weeks before. The Queen of The Netherlands and the King and Queen of Belgium joined the Grand Ducal Family to mark the Accession.

Royal Heirs from around Europe joined the Grand Ducal Family for a Dinner and Gala Performance at the Grand Ducal Palace to celebrate the Enthronement of Grand Duke Henri in April 2001.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Chaumet Emerald Tiara and Queen Sofia wore the Mellerio Shell Tiara for the Luxembourg State Visit to Spain in 2001, which was the first outgoing State Visit of the Reign.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Chaumet Choker Tiara for the Wedding of Crown Prince Haakon of Norway in 2001, while Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara.

Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa were joined by Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Dinner at Windsor Castle in 2002, as well as the Order of the Garter Service, and Royal Ascot.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Aquamarine Tiara for the Luxembourg State Visit to Denmark in 2003, while Queen Margrethe wore the Pearl Poiré Tiara and Princess Alexandra was in the Queen Alexandrine’s Diamond Drop Tiara. The Grand Duchess also wore the Chaumet Choker Tiara for the return gala, through the Danish ladies went without.

The following year, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Chaumet Choker Tiara for the Wedding Gala of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark before wearing the Aquamarine Tiara for the Wedding Ceremony.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Luxembourg Empire Tiara while Queen Beatrix wore the Pearl Button Tiara, Princess Maxima wore Aquamarine Tiara and Princess Margriet wore a Sapphire Tiara for the Luxembourg State Visit to The Netherlands in 2006.

A week later, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Chaumet Choker Tiara and Art Deco Sapphire Necklace for King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 60th Birthday Banquet in 2006.

A month later, Royal Guests and Relatives gathered from around Europe for Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa’s Silver Anniversary, which began with a a Gala Performance at the Grand Théâtre de la Ville in Luxembourg.

The following evening, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa hosted a Gala Dinner at Berg Castle, which had an even bigger royal attendance than the previous evening, and royal guests included King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, Queen Fabiola, Crown Prince Philippe, and Princess Mathilde of Belgium, King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie of Greece, Queen Beatrix, Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, and Princess Maxima of The Netherlands, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Crown Prince Felipe and Crown Princess Letizia of Spain, the Princess Royal, Tsar Simeon and Queen Margarita of Bulgaria, Prince Albert II of Monaco, Prince Hassan and Princess Sarvath of Jordan, the Duke and Duchess of Braganza, Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia, Crown Princess Margareta and Prince Radu of Romania, and the Aga Khan among members of the extended Grand Ducal Family.

For King Harald’s 70th Birthday Banquet in 2007, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg wore the Vine Leaves Tiara.

 Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Luxembourg Empire Tiara and Queen Paola was in the Nine Provinces Tiara for the Luxembourg State Visit to Belgium in 2007, with Princess Margaretha of Luxembourg wearing the Sapphire Bracelet Tiara, Crown Princess Mathilde in the Laurel Wreath Tiara, and Princess Astrid in the Savoy-Aosta Tiara.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara while Queen Sofia wore Queen Victoria Eugenie’s Cartier Pearl Tiara for the Spanish State Visit to Luxembourg in 2007.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Chaumet Emerald Tiara and Queen Silvia of Sweden was wearing the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure for the Luxembourg State Visit to Sweden in 2008, also attended by Crown Princess Victoria in the Baden Fringe Tiara and Princess Madeleine in the Modern Fringe Tiara. The Grand Duchess also arrived wearing the Grand Duchess Adélaïde Tiara for the Return Gala but took it off when the Swedish Royal Ladies arrived without them.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Chaumet Emerald Tiara and the Vine Leaves Tiara for Queen Margrethe’s 70th Birthday Celebrations in 2010.

Just a few months later, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the massive Luxembourg Empire Tiara for the Wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara and Art Deco Sapphire Necklace while Queen Sonja wore Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara, Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore her Diamond Daisy Bandeau, Princess Astrid wore the Vasa Tiara and Princess Martha Louise was in her Tiara on the Luxembourg State Visit to Norway in 2011.

Grand Duchess Maria Theresa wore the Grand Duchess Adélaïde Tiara for the Wedding of Prince Albert of Monaco in 2011.

Later that year, the Grand Duchess Maria Theresa wore the Chaumet Emerald Tiara and the Chaumet Choker Tiara for the Nobel Prize Ceremony and King’s Banquet.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg wore the Vine Leaves Tiara and Queen Beatrix wore Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara for the Dutch State Visit to Luxembourg in 2012.

Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg were among the guests at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in 2012.

The grandest Celebration was the Wedding Gala of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg and Countess Stephanie de Lannoy in 2012, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Chaumet Choker Tiara, the soon-to-be Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Vine Leaves Tiara, Princess Alexandra wore the Diamond Floral Tiara, and Princess Tessy wore the Grand Duchess Adélaïde Tiara.

For the National Day Gala in 2015, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie was in the Grand Duchess Adélaïde Tiara, Princess Alexandra wore the Citrine and Pearl Tiara, Princess Claire was in the Ruby Tiara, and Princess Tessy wore the Amethyst Tiara.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie was in her Diamond Butterfly Tiara, Princess Alexandra wore the Chaumet Choker Tiara, Princess Claire was in the Grand Duchess Adélaïde Tiara, and Princess Tessy wore the Vine Leaves Tiara for the National Day Gala in 2016.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Grand Duchess Adélaïde Tiara for King Harald and Queen Sonja’s 80th Birthday Banquet in 2017.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Amethyst Tiara for the National Day Gala in Luxembourg in 2017.

Princess Alexandra wore the Chaumet Choker Tiara for the Luxembourg State Visit to Japan in the fall of 2017.

For the Dutch State Visit to Luxembourg, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara, Queen Maxima was in the Stuart Diamond Tiara, and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Chaumet Choker Tiara.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Chaumet Choker Tiara few days later for the Crown Prince Frederik’s 50th Birthday Gala Dinner at Christiansborg Palace.

Just a few weeks later, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara for the Luxembourg National Day Gala, while Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Turquoise Tiara, Princess Claire was in the Grand Duchess Adélaïde Tiara,  and Princess Alexandra wore the Aquamarine Tiara.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Diamond Floral Tiara, and Princess Alexandra wore the Turquoise Tiara for the Luxembourg National Day Gala in 2019.

For the Belgian State Visit to Luxembourg, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara, Queen Mathilde wore the Nine Provinces Tiara and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Citrine and Pearl Tiara.

In 2020, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Sapphire Necklace Tiara and Princess Alexandra wore the Chaumet Choker Tiara for the newly instituted Luxembourg New Years Reception at the Grand Ducal Palace, to replace the annual National Day Gala.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara and the Nassau Diamond Rose Brooches for the Luxembourg State Visit to Portugal in 2022.

Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa were among the guests at the Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, though unlike other foreign royals, they did not attend Heads of State Reception or the Committal Service at St George’s Chapel.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Aquamarine Bandeau Tiara and Parure and Princess Alexandra wore the Chaumet Emerald Tiara for the Luxembourg New Years Reception in 2023.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Emerald Peacock Necklace for the Reception at Buckingham Palace before the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess attended the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Grand Duchess Adélaïde Tiara and Princess Alexandra wore the the Vine Leaves Tiara for the Luxembourg New Years Reception in 2024.

The final outgoing State Visit was to their cousins in Belgium, for which Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara with the Aquamarine Parure and Queen Mathilde wore the Nine Provinces Tiara for the Banquet at the Royal Chateau of Laeken.

For this year’s New Year’s Reception at the Grand Ducal Palace, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Citrine and Pearl Tiara.

Most recently, the last State Banquet of the Grand Duke’s Reign was held in March earlier this year for the State Visit of the President of Singapore, at which Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Chaumet Choker Tiara.
