Accession of Grand Duke Guillaume V of Luxembourg

The Dutch and Belgian Royal Families have joined the Grand Ducal Family for the Accession of Grand Duke Guillaume V of Luxembourg on October 3rd, upon the Abdication of Grand Duke Henri.

Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg received the Dutch and Belgian Royal Families as well as the President of the European Council, the President of the European Parliament and national Dignitaries outside the Palais Grand-Ducal.

Grand Duke Henri signed the document of abdication in the Salle des Fêtes at Palais Grand-Ducal, which was followed by a reading of the Grand Ducal decree and a speech by the Prime Minister.

Afterwards, the Grand Ducal Family and the Dutch and Belgian Royal Families joined Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie to walk from the Palais Grand-Ducal to the adjacent Hôtel de la Chambre des Députés.

Grand Duke Guillaume took his seat on the Throne with a reading of the Grand Ducal decree concerning the abdication by Prime Minister Luc Frieden, ahead of the swearing-in of Grand Duke Guillaume:

“I swear to observe the Constitution and the laws and to faithfully fulfill my constitutional duties.”

After the Ceremony, the Grand Ducal Family and Royal Guests walked back to the Palais Grand-Ducal, where the new Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie appeared on the Palace Balcony before being joined by members of the Grand Ducal Family and the Dutch and Belgian Royal Families.

Afterwards, the Grand Ducal Family and Royal Guests walked from the Palais Grand-Ducal to the City Hall, for a Welcome by the Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, ahead of meeting members of the public on Place Guillaume II, and going to a Reception at the Cercle Cité.

Grand Duke Guillaume wore the military uniform of a General, Commander of the Army with the Order of the Gold Lion of the House of Nassau. Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore her Diamond Earrings with the Order of the Gold Lion of the House of Nassau.
