King Charles to host German president for state visit

LONDON — King Charles will welcome German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Windsor Castle for a three-day state visit in December.

Buckingham Palace said Monday that the monarch will host the first state visit by a German president in 27 years from Dec. 3 to 5 with his wife Elke Büdenbender at the royal residence.

It marks the third state visit hosted by Charles and Queen Camilla this year after welcoming French President Emmanuel Macron in July and U.S. President Donald Trump in September.

King Charles visited Germany for his first state visit as king in March 2023, where he told the Bundestag of his “wish to renew the pledge of friendship between our nations.”

London and Berlin signed a wide-ranging friendship treaty in July, pledging closer security co-operation and promising to come to one another’s aid in the event of an armed attack.

The visit is likely to include a ceremonial welcome, a banquet at Windsor Castle, and talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
