Prince and Princess of Wales name HMS Glasgow

The Prince of Wales, Duke of Rothesay in Scotland, joined the Princess of Wales, Sponsor of HMS Glasgow, for the ship’s naming ceremony at the BAE Systems’ shipyard in Scotstoun in Glasgow on May 22nd. The Princess was appointed as the Sponsor of HMS Glasgow, a state-of-the-art Type 26 anti-submarine frigate, designed to provide protection to the UK’s nuclear deterrent and aircraft carriers, in 2021.

To cheers from hundreds of friends, family, workers, VIP guests and the 45-strong ship’s company at BAE Systems shipbuilding facility in Scotstoun, The Duchess of Rothesay, as she is known in Scotland, declared the time-honoured words: “I name this ship Glasgow. May God bless her and all who serve in her.”

Smashing a bottle of whisky against the hull for good luck, Her Royal Highness formally named HMS Glasgow, the first of eight Type 26 frigates at the leading edge of naval warfare.

A pleasure to meet with members of the Ship’s Company and their families, as well as BAE Systems’ Shipbuilding Academy apprentices and graduates, and some of the incredibly skillful teams involved in the building of the ship.

The Princess of Wales wore Princess Diana’s Sapphire Earrings and a a brooch designed by James Porter & Son, made of white gold of the insignia of HMS Glasgow.

One of the oldest jewelers in Scotland, James Porter & Son are based in Glasgow’s historic Argyll Arcade. The brooch was funded by two London livery companies, the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers and the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors.
