Donald Trump has created a “difficult situation” for Sir Keir Starmer as the US President plans to sue the BBC for up to $5billion, GB News’ Olivia Utley said.
Delivering her analysis of the Channel’s world exclusive interview with Mr Trump, Olivia forecast that the ongoing row between the British broadcaster and the leader of the free world could spell trouble for the Prime Minister.
In the sit-down Oval Office interview, Mr Trump told GB News’ Bev Turner that he will pursue legal action against the British broadcaster for the way it spliced and edited his speech delivered on January 6, 2021, which made it appear as if he had called for his supporters to storm the Capitol.
The Panorama documentary edited clips together which were filmed almost an hour apart, which seemed to suggest that he told his supporters to “fight like hell”.
Speaking about the way that Mr Trump believed about the UK, GB News’ Political Correspondent said that it was a “very marked change” from the conversations between him and the Prime Minister back during September’s state visit.
“Then, he seemed to be very complimentary about the UK,” Olivia said.
“Now he seems to be sticking the knife in wherever he can, whether it’s the British policy on not using oil and gas in the North Sea, Sadiq Khan, he’s been very critical of him, which is awkward for Keir Starmer because, of course, Sadiq Khan is a very close ally of the Prime Minister.
“Then, of course, the substance of the interview was about the BBC. And again, this is very, very difficult for Keir Starmer.”

After the US President sent a letter to the BBC threatening legal action over what the corporation has now dubbed an “error in judgement”, he has pressed further, claiming that he could demand up to $5billion in compensation.
Olivia said that this would cause difficulty for Sir Keir, falling between escalating tensions between the taxpayer-funded body and the world leader.
“Starmer has spent a lot of this year cosying up to Donald Trump. And now there is this huge row really between President Trump and the BBC.
“At first, it looked as though the President was just demanding an apology and was threatening to sue if that apology didn’t emerge.

“The BBC has now apologised, although some people say the apology is a little bit mealy-mouthed.”
Olivia continued: “Now, there’s obviously a big question over who would foot the bill if that case went through, because the BBC is funded by the British taxpayer.
“Obviously, it would go down very badly with your average voter if the British taxpayer bore the brunt of this. But also, it’s a huge question about institutional bias within the BBC already.
“Keir Starmer has made the decision to deny what’s in that Michael Prescott report, and the Prime Minister has said that he does not believe that the BBC is institutionally biased.”
“I wonder if he might come to regret that, because it is very clear that Donald Trump believes that the BBC is institutionally biased, and I wonder if this will be a hill that actually Keir Starmer decides that he doesn’t want to die on.
“If this is the thing that threatens that very important economic relationship between the UK and the US, that could be a big problem for Starmer at just the time he needs all the friends he can get.”
Olivia explained that the situation proved to be “tricky” as the BBC is indeed funded by the taxpayer, although it is not a state-funded broadcaster.
Sir Keir will subsequently have to consider the “nuanced” relationship between the Government and the BBC during a row which could lead to Mr Trump “go for Britain”.
