Throughout the year, I keep a running list of gift ideas in my Notes app — things people casually mention, pieces I stumble across online, and all-round brilliant finds that I just know someone would love. So when birthdays (or Christmas) roll around, I’m already one step ahead.

But that’s only part of it. As a member of the Glamour shopping team, I’m regularly at product launches and press days, deep-diving into the newest drops in fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. Wherever possible, I test products myself — or at the very least something from the brand, purely for quality control. And if I need a second opinion? I turn to fellow GLAMOUR writers, my very honest non-professional-focus-group (aka my friends), and real customer reviews.

Because this isn’t really about what I think makes a good Secret Santa gift, it’s about what other people will genuinely be excited to unwrap. From tricky mother-in-laws and tweens who’ve outgrown toys, to beauty crackers you’d actually keep and use, and the biggest challenge of all: decent gifts for dads, I’ve considered it all.

When I get my hands on a sample, here’s what I look for:

• Design — Will it stand the test of time? Can they display it with pride?
• Price point — Would someone really spend this much money on it?
• Delivery — Was shipping a smooth experience? Were there any surprising costs?
• Giftability — Do they want it or need it? Will they use it?
