Far-right Bardella suffers French campaign tradition: Being pelted with eggs and flour

PARIS — Far-right leader Jordan Bardella learned the hard way that the road to the Elysée Palace often involves taking the base ingredients of a proper French crêpe to the face.

Bardella was struck by an egg and covered in flour by protesters in separate public appearances within days of each other while on a press tour promoting his second book, “Ce que veulent les Français” (“What the French Want.”) The egg incident was not caught on camera, but video of the flour fiasco shows a white cloud flying over Marine Le Pen’s protégé while shrieks of horror come from the confused crowd.

Bardella and his party, the National Rally, quickly made it clear they’ve had enough of the shenanigans. Bardella said he would press charges against the egg-chucker and party spokesperson Aleksandar Nikolic even compared the incident to the killing of Charlie Kirk.

Both apparently failed to realize that this is a sign Bardella is now in the big leagues. Any French politician worth his salt must experience la gastronomie française deconstructed and launched directly à la guele.

President Emmanuel Macron and his predecessor, François Hollande, were both honored with the same campaign rite of passage. In Macron’s case, the egg miraculously did not crack, allowing him to finish his visit yolk-less.

François Fillon and François Bayrou, two other presidential hopefuls and former prime ministers, have both been pelted with food on the campaign trail. And so, too, has France Unbowed leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

Bardella will almost certainly be the National Rally’s candidate for president in 2027 if an appeals court upholds Le Pen’s ban on running for office stemming from her embezzlement conviction.

A poll released last week showed for the first time that he would beat every other potential candidate in a runoff — a major feather to add to his cap.
