Ranvir Singh sparks ITV GMB ‘bias’ row as she wades into Robert Jenrick defection saga: ‘She is so anti-Reform!’

Ranvir Singh has been accused of exhibiting “bias” while fronting ITV’s weekday news show Good Morning Britain thanks to a series of remarks about Robert Jenrick’s exit from the Conservative Party.

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch sensationally sacked the former Shadow Justice Secretary on Thursday after she learned of “irrefutable” evidence that he was planning to defect to Reform UK.

Just a few hours later, Mr Jenrick was unveiled as a Reform UK MP, despite having previously vowed not to join the party and expressed public criticism of the party’s leader and his new boss, Nigel Farage.

News of Mr Jenrick’s defection inevitably dominated the news cycle the following day, with Ms Singh and co-host Kate Garraway discussing what it meant for the political landscape moving forward.

However, their approach to the subject, as well as the manner in which they helmed a number of discussions about the defection, left plenty to be desired, with ITV viewers growing tired of the “constant interruptions” from Ms Singh, in particular.

One moment that prompted complaints online was when the GMB duo welcomed the Conservatives’ new Shadow Justice Secretary, Nick Timothy, to the show.

After Ms Garraway joked she wasn’t sure whether to offer her commiserations or congratulations to the politician, he turned his attention to Ms Badenoch’s decisive action.

Mr Timothy told the pair: “What Kemi did, when she was given irrefutable evidence of what Rob planned to do, was decisive, and it showed moral clarity.

“It contrasted with the kind of backstabbing and backbiting and the fundamental lack of seriousness we often see from too many politicians at a time when the country faces very significant challenges.

“We should be debating the future of the country’s economic model, the shared national identity, which is in some ways weakening, and the need to radically reform the state so we can actually start to get things done again.

“But too often, politicians are playing these kinds of games, and we did see that at the back end of the Conservative government, which I’m very open about.

“We see it right now every day with the Labour government — constant speculation about Keir Starmer and who might replace him — and we see it in the Reform party too. But what Kemi did showed a real contrast with all of that.”

ITV GMB: Ranvir Singh and Kate Garraway

Ms Garraway was the first of the presenting pair to interject. “Hang on,” she interrupted. “You backed this man to be party leader. Did you know he was going to do this? Are you friends still? It’s a very odd situation, and however well you think Kemi Badenoch handled it, he’s still gone, along with 24 other Conservative Party members.”

Mr Timothy answered: “Look, I’m sorry that Rob has made the decision he has. But the Conservative Party is a long and successful party with lots of brilliant people in it-“

Before he could delve further, it was Ms Singh’s turn to interject. “I’m not sure people will agree the last 14 years were a success, to be perfectly honest. What you said was -“

But Mr Timothy fired back, cutting in to point out: “Excuse me, that’s not what I said. I said the Conservative Party is a long and successful political party.

ITV GMB: Ranvir Singh

“I’ve been very open about the fact that in the last few years of the Conservative government, we let the country down.

“Being open about that and being able to look the country in the eye and acknowledge that is a very important part of what we need to do in order to recover to show people we’re capable of changing and to show people we are capable of offering them the prospectus that the country needs with the very significant challenges that we face.”

Ms Singh persisted as she attempted to butt in, before eventually reeling off: “Yeah, because… just to underline the point. Posting on X, you said, ‘My party needs to be unsparing in its analysis of why we lost and what we must do next. Robert Jenrick has shown willingness to do that, and so he has my full support’.

“So clearly you believed he, not Kemi Badenoch, was the right person to restructure the Conservative Party, and yet, he has got a point, hasn’t he, Robert Jenrick? When he eviscerated Mel Stride, he eviscerated Priti Patel for their parts in the Conservative government, he had a point.

“Record tax burden, immigration going up, there’s a litany of disasters that he now is separating himself from and laying square at the feet of those at the top of the party.”

Mr Timothy eventually replied: “Look, what Rob said at the time of the leadership election, and what I said, which is actually very similar to what Kemi said at the time and since she was elected as our leader, is true, we do need to be unsparing in our analysis of why we lost. I don’t want to gloss over any of the reasons why the country rejected us -“

“So why do you-” Ms Singh cut in once more, but Mr Timothy stood firm: “Can I just finish? If we did that, we wouldn’t come up with the kind of analysis that would lead us to the kind of policy prescription that the country needs for the future.”

Ms Singh continued her line of questioning as she asked: “Do you expect more defections? I mean, you’ve had 24, are you and the top team at the Conservatives braced and ready for more?”

Kemi Badenoch

Mr Timothy replied: “I spent yesterday in parliament and I was in the chamber when the news broke, I can honestly tell you the reaction of Conservative MPs was disappointment with Rob’s decision and support for Kemi’s resolve.

“People were impressed with the speed and strength with which she reacted. And I think that matches how the Conservative Party has been for some time under Kemi’s leadership.

“We are united and focussed on the issues facing the country, and we are starting, I think, over the last few months to cut through with the public in a way we weren’t more than a year ago.”

The final few moments of Mr Timothy’s answer were also drowned out as Ms Singh intervened to bring the discussion to a close.

ITV GMB: Viewers

But it wasn’t just with Mr Timothy that Ms Singh managed to irk viewers with her approach to the matter, with comments made during a debate with guests Caroline Flint and Salma Shah also caused uproar.

So much so, social media was soon flooded with opinions from viewers who were rather unhappy with the ITV presenter. “@GMB why can’t the presenters be more objective. Ranvir is so anti reform. I get the labour and conservative ‘pundits’ views but at least kate is objective,” one GMB viewer complained. (sic)

“Can Good Morning Britain conduct one interview without interrupting a guest? The rudeness of their presenters is flabbergasting. @GMB #gmb #goodmorningbritain,” a second fumed, while a third echoed: “@itv please don’t allow these 2 together again, 2 massive wafflers who love the sound of their own voices, that slot was an embarrassment, why get guests on to talk all over them these 2 are atrocious? #GMB.”

“Sick and fed up of presenters interrupting politicians answering a question the presenters asked them STOP IT #GMB,” a fourth added, while a fifth added of Ms Singh: “Is this the Ranvir show? Never shuts up! #gmb.” (sic)

Another commented: “@GMB can someone aka #director remind #ranvirsingh to stop interrupting while guests are speaking or have her as a guest instead, as she obvs has so much to say. Bad enough with @susannareid100 regularly yelling and cutting guests off. Thanks.” (sic)

And a seventh sarcastically quipped: “Feel it’s a bit rich of Ranvir Singh to comment on Jenrick’s defection because of his burning ambition to become more prominent when it’s clear hers is to replace Susanna Reid as the major voice on GMB by refusing to stop talking.” (sic)

An eighth similarly opined: “I thought this program couldn’t get more biased against Reform but I was wrong. Ranvir is presenting.”

However, it wasn’t all negative press for Ms Singh, as one X user waded into the online discussion to share their praise: “Really enjoying Ranvir and Kate together #GMB.” (sic)
