Accession of King Harald V of Norway

Queen Sonja joined King Harald V of Norway as he was Sworn-In at the Stortinget in Oslo, marking the accession of the first Norwegian-born Monarch in over 650 years following the death of King Olav on this day in 1991, 35 years ago.

King Harald V of Norway was joined by Queen Sonja as he swore an oath of allegiance to the Norwegian Constitution in a Ceremony at the Stortinget in Oslo, a few days following the Death of King Olav V and a few months before his Enthronement in Trondheim.

‘I solemnly swear to reign in the Kingdom of Norway in accordance with its Constitution and laws, so help me Almighty God’

King Harald V of Norway was wearing the Order of St. Olav and the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit.

Queen Sonja wore Queen Alexandra’s Maltese Cross with the Order of St. Olav and the Royal Family Order of King Olav V.

The Consecration of King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway was held at the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim in June.

Shortly after King Olav V died, his children were walking down the stairs when the physician came up behind them and said “Your Majesty.” It was only when Princess Astrid nudged her brother and said “He means you” that Harald V realized that he was now King.

Many publish anonymously or under initials—a practice that reflects the publication’s long-standing emphasis on discretion and editorial objectivity. While they bring expertise in European nobility, protocol, and archival research, their role is not to opine, but to document. Their focus remains on accuracy, historical integrity, and the preservation of events and individuals whose significance might otherwise go unrecorded.
