Labour has launched a fresh bid to help drivers switch to electric vehicles, as more than 50,000 drivers have already saved thousands of pounds through an incentive scheme.

The new “Get that electric feeling” campaign is the Government’s latest attempt to persuade motorists to transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles and towards cleaner alternatives.

Drivers across the country will see the new Department for Transport campaign on TV, radio and digital outlets, with a particular focus on the Electric Car Grant.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves increased the total funding package included in the Electric Car Grant during the recent Budget, with a total of £1.8billion available for discounts.

The Electric Car Grant provides drivers with an incentive of either £1,500 or £3,750 off the total price of an EV that costs £37,000 or less. Some of the UK’s most popular brands are eligible for the incentive, including Ford, Mini, Vauxhall and more.

Recent data from the Government shows that more than 50,000 drivers have already made savings through the Electric Car Grant, which launched around six months ago.

The campaign will also highlight how motorists can save up to £1,400 a year on fuel and maintenance costs as the Government attempts to stimulate the electric vehicle market further.

Keir Maher, Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister, said: “Our campaign is here to show millions of Brits the benefits of making the switch, which could save their family budget thousands.

“With over 87,000 public chargers across the UK and thousands more on the way, our message is clear – going electric has never been easier and under this Government, you can save thousands when you do.”

Research from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that almost one in four new vehicles purchased in 2025 was electric, with a total market share of 23.4 per cent.

Overall, battery electric vehicle sales increased 23.9 per cent, while petrol fell eight per cent and diesel registrations dropped 15.6 per cent.

Labour has confirmed that sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles will be banned by the end of the decade, with only zero emission vehicles being on sale from 2035 onwards.

The Electric Car Grant has already been seen to stimulate sales of EVs, with hopes that this will continue in 2026, especially alongside the DfT’s new media campaign.

Vicky Edmonds, CEO of EVA England, said it was “positive” for the Government to launch the campaign, describing it as “essential” to ensure the EV transition continues at pace.

“Campaigns like this play an important role in building confidence, but more must be done to make switching realistic for everyone,” she added.

Similarly, Ian Plummer, CCO at Auto Trader, stated that electric cars were a “great option”, especially with nine in 10 drivers who have switched, saying they would never go back to petrol or diesel.
