Happy Birthday to the Duchess of Gloucester, who turns 79 today! The Danish-born wife of the late Queen’s cousin, the Duchess has been a hardworking member of the Royal Family for over 50 years, and possesses an enormous collection of heirloom jewellery, bigger than some main royal collections, which includes Queen Mary’s Turquoise Fringe Necklace!

The exact origin of this Turquoise and Pearl Fringe Necklace is unknown but it was notably worn by Queen Mary for the Children’s Coronation Fete part of the Festival of Empire Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1911, as discovered by RJWMB.
After she had given the Teck Turquoise Tiara as a wedding gifting 1935, Queen Mary also gave the Turquoise and Pearl Fringe Necklace to her daughter-in-law Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, who wore it with her Diamond Necklace Tiara for the Royal Film Performance of ‘Where No Vultures Fly’ in 1951.
Princess Alice also wore Turquoise and Pearl Fringe Necklace with the Teck Turquoise Tiara for an Australia Day Banquet at the Savoy Hotel in London in 1953, around the same time an official portrait was taken by the famed Dorothy Wilding.
The Duchess of Gloucester most notably wore Queen Mary’s Turquoise and Pearl Fringe Necklace for an event in the 1980s.
More recently, Queen Mary’s Turquoise Fringe Necklace was worn by Lady Rose Windsor for the Wedding of Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones at Windsor Castle in 1999. Let’s hope we see this worn again soon!
