Amanda Seyfried looks unrecognisable with a dramatic hair transformation

When we think of Amanda Seyfried, we think of her super-long, super-blonde hair. From Mamma Mia to Mean Girls, her long blonde locks, whether they’re boho and wavy or super straight, are a staple of her look. So when she took to Instagram on June 3 to post a picture of her hair transformation, it’s safe to say we were all shocked.

For her newest look, Seyfried showed off a hairstyle we’ve never seen on her before: short, choppy bangs with the rest of her hair pulled back into a low ponytail. Also different? Her hair colour. While she normally has blonde tresses, it her hair here looks darker – nearly bronde (the colour has been a go-to lately, with stars like Katie Holmes and royals like Kate Middleton leaning into it).

Seyfried isn’t the only celeb who’s gotten on board with extra choppy bangs lately. Some, like Miley Cyrus, are even taking things a step further (or shorter) with forehead-grazing micro bangs that sit an inch or more above the eyebrows. Though Seyfried’s new bangs are definitely short, they aren’t quite short enough to qualify for micro bang status.

A heads-up: Don’t expect to see Seyfried with this fringe again anytime soon. It turns out the hair was very short-lived; it was actually some behind-the-scenes content for TV show Long Bright River, a crime drama she stars in. Seyfried only tried on this hairstyle while filming for the show – in the rest of the photos in her Instagram carousel, you’ll see she’s back to her trusty long blonde hair.

Despite her classic blonde, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the actor push the boundaries with her hair, albeit temporarily. At Met Gala 2024, where the theme was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and the dress code was The Garden of Time, Seyfried traded in her sun-kissed strands for metallic silver S-shaped curls in a super-structured hairdo, topped with a silver tiara. Romantic, dreamy, and definitely on theme.
