Cara Delevingne‘s hair rarely deviates from her signature dirty blonde hue. But for this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the model and actor decided to switch things up with an edgy new cut and colour.
Stepping out for the premiere of The History of Sound, there were audible gasps as she pulled off a dramatic metamorphosis on the red carpet: a jet black shag with a blunt fringe.

Her new look was all the more surprising given her recent public appearances. Only a few weeks ago, Cara Delevingne was seen at the world premiere of Ocean With David Attenborough at The Royal Festival Hall in London with long, undone sandy waves – and notably, no fringe.

Now the star’s hair skims her clavicle in wet-look messy layers and features a jagged, piecey fringe. Paired with a burgundy ballgown, complete with a fitted drop-waist bodice and full, billowing skirt, the look was 90% goth.
The makeup by Harold James, L’Oreal Paris‘ global makeup artist, echoed the vibe with heavily kohl-rimmed eyes, smokey grey and burgundy eyeshadow and a nude lip – and little to no blush or contour. Even her brows were dyed to match her inky strands.
But Cara’s new hair also leans into Indie sleaze and I can totally see party girls remixing the look as a wet-look, club rat lob this summer.
The dress code at Cannes may be more demure in 2025, but the hair styles certainly aren’t. The red carpet has served up some seriously good transformations with Bella Hadid debuting ghost blonde hair featuring honey and bronde accents. While Kristen Stewart made pink dip-dyed strands our go-to inspiration for festival season. And all of it looks really cool.
