Former Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell dies aged 84

Lord Menzies Campbell, former leader of the Liberal Democrats, has died at the age of 84.

The party announced his death on Friday morning.

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey paid tribute to Lord Campbell, who he described as an “incredibly warm and caring friend”.

He wrote to X: “Ming Campbell was a dedicated public servant and a true Liberal giant.

“His principled leadership opposing the Iraq War was a mark of his morality, courage and wisdom.

“But more than that, he was an incredibly warm and caring friend and colleague. We will miss him terribly.”

LP Staff Writers

Writers at Lord’s Press come from a range of professional backgrounds, including history, diplomacy, heraldry, and public administration. Many publish anonymously or under initials—a practice that reflects the publication’s long-standing emphasis on discretion and editorial objectivity. While they bring expertise in European nobility, protocol, and archival research, their role is not to opine, but to document. Their focus remains on accuracy, historical integrity, and the preservation of events and individuals whose significance might otherwise go unrecorded.
