Sadiq Khan heaps praise on Zohran Mamdani as he claims ‘hope won – just like in London’

Sir Sadiq Khan has lavished Zohran Mamdani with praise after his “historic” victory in the New York City mayoral election.

After Mr Mamdani surged to victory on Tuesday night, the Mayor of London likened the result to his own triumph in Britain’s capital.

Sir Sadiq said: “New Yorkers faced a clear choice – between hope and fear – and just like we’ve seen in London – hope won.

“Huge congratulations to Zohran Mamdani on his historic campaign.”

Sir Sadiq previously discussed the New York mayoral elections at the Cop30 conference in Brazil, where he drew similarities between his and Mr Mamdani’s cities.

The London Mayor told Bloomberg: “There’s a reason why there are some people who hate London and hate New York.

“Because we are progressive cities. We are liberal cities. We are multicultural cities and we’re incredibly successful.”

But Sir Sadiq is not the only prominent Labour figure to hail Mr Mamdani’s win.

Brent East MP Dawn Butler, widely tipped to run for London Mayor in the future, praised Mr Mamdani’s commitment to “hope and diversity”.

Ms Butler beamed on social media: “Voting matters!!!!!

“Never give your power away. Some politicians divide some unite.”

She also commended Mr Mamdani for “bringing people together” and for his “energy and positivity”, before concluding: “You DEI did it!”

ZOHRAN MAMDANI ELECTED – READ THE LATEST:

In the run up to Mr Mamdani’s victory in New York, similarities were drawn between the self-professed democratic socialist and Knight of the Realm Sir Sadiq.

US political commentator Lee Cohen, writing for GB News, had previously lumped the pair together as “woke, progressive Muslim leaders”.

Mr Cohen wrote: “The prospect of both London and New York being led by figures with such records should chill every defender of Western values.

“Khan has turned London into a laboratory for open-borders ideology, with little regard for the pressures on public services, housing, or social cohesion.

Zohran Mamdani

“Mamdani promises even more radical immigration policies, threatening to overwhelm New York’s already strained infrastructure and further erode the shared identity that binds these great cities together.”

President Donald Trump has repeatedly hit out at Mr Mamdani, labelling him a “communist” and has threatened to withhold federal funding to New York if he was elected.

The next Mayor of New York has previously described himself as “Trump’s worst nightmare”.

And in his victory speech, Mr Mamdani laid down the gauntlet to the President, saying: “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”

On social media, Mr Trump replied: “AND SO IT BEGINS!”
