The Government’s response to the China spying scandal is “incredulous” and looks like a “cover-up”, according to Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride.

He told GB News: “The National Security Adviser, you would think, would be across something as significant as this, but the suggestion is that it was all sort of weighted or focused on his deputy, a civil servant, and I think most people would say that just sounds totally incredulous.

“Look, it does feel a bit like a cover-up. We’ve had a Prime Minister that just 48 hours ago was telling us that the evidence that’s now been released could not be released, and yet changed his position yesterday on Prime Minister’s Questions.

“We had ministers out 48 hours ago telling everybody that there were no substantive meetings around this matter involving the National Security Adviser at all, and yet, we heard from the Prime Minister yesterday that there was.

“What we are saying is, let’s get to the bottom of exactly what happened. Let’s have that information, let’s have the correspondence, the memos, et cetera, around this activity, so that we can make a proper assessment.”
