Is Wayward Season 2 Happening? Creator Mae Martin Just Gave a Key Update

At the time of writing, Netflix has not renewed Wayward for a second season. The show was released as a limited series, meaning the eight episodes we received were supposed to be the entire series. However, Mae Martin seems eager to continue.

Speaking to TV Insider, Martin weighed in on the future of the series, saying that while “hopefully [everything is] tied up enough that it’s satisfying to watch as a series,” they could continue the story. “I was told it was a miniseries, but there’s definitely more story to tell, I think. We left all those characters in crisis, basically,” they added.

As far as other actors, Toni Collette noted that the cast is eager to return to the world of Tall Pines, since it is “endlessly intriguing” and there are “so many places it could go, for sure.” Alyvia Alyn Lind, who plays Leila, also told Decider that she “would love to come back” and that the cast was “ready.”

Speaking to Variety, Martin shared their conundrum of continuing the story beyond its intended single season. “I’ve been doing so much press, and I’m so interested in people’s reactions to the ending. It seems like people have an appetite for more,” they shared. “Hopefully, it works as a mini-series, but then it’s also obviously fun to imagine what would happen.”

Who would be in the cast of Wayward season 2?

Wayward stars Mae Martin as Alex Dempsey, Alyvia Alyn Lind as Leila, Sydney Topliffe as Abbie, and Toni Collette as Evelyn Wade. Sarah Gadon, John Daniel, Elizabeth Adams, Milton Torres Lara, Joshua Close, Tattiawna Jones, and Isolde Ardies round off the main cast. Recurring cast included Brandon Jay McLaren, Patrick J. Adams, Gage Munroe, Byron Mann, Jenny Raven, Cynthia Ritchie, Patrick Gallagher, and more. You can learn more about the actors and the characters they play here.

Should the show return for a second season, it is likely that Brandon Jay McLaren wouldn’t return, seeing as his character, Dwyane, was killed. While Evelyn’s fate is not as clear-cut, it seems like Collette would likely return — not only because the actor is keen for it, but because Martin believes we haven’t seen the last of her character. “I don’t think [she’s dead],” Martin told Variety. “I think she’s a vegetable and, yeah, I’d be curious to see if she could ever come out of it, but she’s definitely a vegetable.”

Speaking to TV Insider, Martin revealed that their intention is to “dig deeper” into the storylines of supporting characters should Wayward get a second season, while also exploring the aftermath of the events from season 1 — a.k.a. Evelyn’s status, Abbie’s escape, Rory’s sacrifice, Alex’s fate, Laura’s future, and more

Wayward is now streaming on Netflix. This post will be updated as news about a potential Wayward season 2 breaks.
