What We Know About Amazon’s Tomb Raider Series, Starring Sophie Turner as Lara Croft

If we weren’t already hyped for the Tomb Raider reboot series, Prime Video has just turned that excitement all the way up, revealing a first look at Sophie Turner as our new Lara Croft.

This iconic, booty-shorts-wearing role has been tackled by some seriously talented stars: Angelina Jolie first brought Lara to life in 2001 and 2003, arguably setting the gold standard, followed by Alicia Vikander in 2018.

Now, Turner is stepping into Croft’s boots (and braid), and the set photos suggest she’s ready to do the single side braid proud while taking on all the tomb-raiding action we love.

Here’s everything we know so far about the new Tomb Raider series, starring Turner as Lara Croft.

When is Amazon’s new Tomb Raider series out?

The series, which is currently in production, is an adaptation of the classic video game franchise and was originally greenlit at Prime Video in May 2024. But as we all know, this stuff takes time.

Amazon have confirmed that production is underway, but no further details. Given the usual filming timelines, the earliest we’ll see Tomb Raider is late 2026, or even early 2027, though fans are already speculating about release dates and potential spin-offs based on the franchise’s rich history.

Who’s in the cast with Sophie Turner?

As mentioned, Sophie Turner is taking on the iconic role of Lara Croft, with her casting first reported in November 2024 and now confirmed with a series of exciting in-character photos. Turner is best known as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, for which she received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2019.

The star-studded ensemble also includes Martin Bobb-Semple, Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein.

Adding even more weight to the project is Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who will serve as creator, writer, and executive producer. Alongside her, Had Hodge is on board as executive producer and co-showrunner, with Jonathan van Tulleken directing and also serving as an executive producer.

Tomb Raider boasts a plethora of iconic characters,” Waller-Bridge said of the cast. “I am thrilled to have been able to bring some personal and fan favourites to the screen while also introducing a few new rascals of our own to the mix. This cast is beyond my wildest dreams!”
