Where is Shetland filmed? BBC filming locations for season 10 revealed

Murder mystery TV series Shetland is back on our screens, and in addition to the drama, we’re low-key intrigued by the stunning Shetland filming locations for the 10th season.

Starring Ashley Jensen and Alison O’Donnell once more, this series follows the aftermath of another grisly murder, AKA perfect cosy season watching, we think.

As usual, Shetland was filmed in, you guessed it, the island archipelago in Scotland. But we’ve done some research exactly where, so you can plan a gorgeous road trip to honour the return of the much-loved series.

What happens in Shetland season 10?

According to BBC‘s synopsis, Shetland series 10 sees “Calder (Ashley Jensen) and Tosh (Alison O’Donnell) drawn to a remote village following the sinister murder of an elderly woman. As they begin to unravel life in this close-knit community, shocking, long-buried secrets rise to the surface with unexpected consequences for all – including the team.”

Shetland filming locations

Lerwick

We see the capital town (and port) in Shetland a fair bit, like in most seasons, and in series 10 we see a lot of scenes around the town’s lifeboat pier. We see popular location Commercial Street, which has appeared on screen in every single series of Shetland so far.

The most recognisable Lerwick location is likely Lodberries house, previously home to the show’s former lead up until season 8 DI Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall). Also look out for the gorgeous Bain’s Beach, near Perez’s house, Lerwick Town Hall and Lerwick Harbour. Shetland’s police station is actually filmed in Lerwick’s sheriff court.

Burra

The beaches in Burra – which hosts the fictional village of Skellwick – has been dubbed as some of the UK’s most beautiful beaches, and it’s appeared in series two and five of Shetland. Double-sided Minn beach and Meal Beach near Hamnavoe which featured heavily in series seven.

Sumburgh Head

The southernmost tip of Shetland is a must visit, mostly due to its iconic lighthouse that was even portrayed as a hotel in season two of the show. You should also check out the nature reserve nearby, plus the cliffs play host to a range of species of seabird. Look out for puffins and razor bills.

Eshaness and the North Mainland

Perhaps the most stunning of all the gorgeous Shetland filming locations is the Eshaness cliffs at the North Mainland, located about an hour’s drive away from Lerwick. For all the geology nerds, the area has volcanic soil and you can even spy million-year-old lava flows there.
