Six Kings and Ten Queens led the Royal Guests and Relatives at the Funeral of King Olav V of Norway in Oslo Cathedral on this day in 1991, 35 years ago, followed by a Procession to the Akershus Fortress for the Burial.
Following the Lying-in-State at the Royal Palace of Oslo, the grand funeral cortège of King Olav V of Norway moved from the Royal Palace to Oslo Cathedral, lined by more than 100,000 mourners along Karl Johans gate. The Norwegian Royal Family was followed by Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik of Denmark, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, King Juan Carlos of Spain, Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands, Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg, King Constantine II of Greece, Prince Hans Adam II of Liechtenstein, The Prince of Wales, Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand, and Prince Albert of Monaco.
The Funeral Service was held at Oslo Cathedral followed by a Procession to the Akershus Fortress, where a private ceremony was held at the Palace Chapel before King Olav was interred in the Royal Mausoleum.
The one-hour church service, attended by 1,000 dignitaries, began with the ringing of bells. It was echoed throughout the country and followed by a minute of silence that brought traffic to a halt in some cities.
After the service, the cortege continued to Akershus fortress for private interment at the royal crypt. Afterward, a 42-cannon salute resounded over the capital.
