Is the Season of the Etsy Witch Over?

Etsy is a one-stop shop for all of your daily needs. It’s the perfect hunting ground for homemade pottery, vintage treasures and, of course, personalised spells courtesy of an Etsy witch. Yes, in case you missed it, the Etsy witch is kind of a major phenomenon. Or at least, it was – because apparently, Etsy is finally cracking down on all of the spell-dealers on the platform. Is the season of the Etsy witch finally over?

First, a little context. What is an Etsy witch, you ask? Well, it’s exactly what it sounds like: a self-proclaimed witch selling her magical abilities on the World Wide Web. Need a good luck charm? A love potion? The perfect blue skies for your outdoor wedding? A career boost only magic can provide? Etsy was the place to find it all for a low price!

But now, it seems Etsy may have had enough of all the witchcraft being bought and sold on the platform. According to one TikTok user, her go-to Etsy witch’s shop has been inexplicably closed.

“I’m panicking because that Etsy witch helped me get tickets to Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine tour!” she said.

She explained that when she finally managed to message the witch, she replied, claiming her shop had been suspended. “Etsy is standing by its policy and removing all spell casters,” read her message.

According to Etsy’s regulations, the sale of “Metaphysical Services” is prohibited. This includes “spellcasting, including ‘attunement’, ‘binding’, ‘activation’ and similar services,” as well as “items that advertise a metaphysical outcome (e.g., attracting wealth, love, gambling luck, more business, employment opportunities, or assistance with legal or relationship situations).”

“It’s very unfortunate that Etsy is getting rid of the Etsy witches,” the TikTok user concluded.

Is it true? Are Etsy witches really a thing of the past? For some, it would possibly be a welcome change. After all, many see Etsy witches as a monetisation of people’s general sense of hopelessness. Getting a job, finding love, paying rent – they’ve all become harder in recent years, and some sceptics see Etsy witches as capitalising on the ensuing sense of fear.

However, if Etsy is cracking down, they’re doing it pretty slowly. The UK Etsy website still has a section titled “Hire a Witch” with over 1,000 listings offering customisable spells.

Way back in 2015, Vice reported another crackdown on Etsy witches.

Sara Cohen, Etsy’s director of communications, explained the changes at the time: “Services have always been prohibited on Etsy. Any service that does not yield a tangible, physical item is not allowed, for example: tailoring, restoring or repairing an item, photographic retouching or colour correction,” she said. However, she added, “Our goal is to support as much of the metaphysical community on Etsy as possible… Sellers may continue to sell astrological charts, tarot readings, and other tangible objects, as long as they are not making a promise that the object will effect a physical change or other outcome.”

So maybe, the secret to surviving as an Etsy witch is simply about your wording.
