Today (Saturday, 21 June) is the summer solstice, which is officially the longest day of the year – and probably the hottest too, now you come to mention it. While we’re technically nearly a month into the British summertime, today is the first day of summer from an astronomical perspective.
Meteorologists divide the seasons according to weather patterns and the Gregorian calendar (the one used in the UK), while astronomers consider the Earth’s position as it orbits the sun. But, as I’m sure you’re all wondering, what does it mean for those of us who are into our astrology?
Well, as it turns out, the summer solstice can be a bit of a funky time for our emotions, and not just because we’re all suffering in the heat. According to Tetiana Tsvil, an astrologer at spiritual guidance platform Nebula, the summer solstice is an “astrological and astronomical event where the Sun hits its peak, and it does so while slipping into the sign of Cancer, that sensitive homebody of the zodiac.”
She explains, “When the Sun aligns with Cancer and Jupiter (the planet of expansion and excess), our emotions do what emotions do best: they take over the room. Boundaries blur. It leads to emotional overload or idealising people and situations.”
We asked Tetiana to do a tarot reading for Glamour readers ahead of the summer solstice, and to find out how everyone can protect their energy today – no matter what your star sign.

“A trio of cards – The Lovers, The Empress, and The Chariot – sets a tone for this Summer Solstice. And honestly, it’s a great combo,” says Tetiana.
The Lovers are not just about romance: they’re about choice, honesty, and telling the truth about what you want instead of pretending you’re fine with whatever. They remind us that the path ahead depends on our authenticity. This card encourages you to build deeper, more aligned relationships, starting with yourself.
The Empress is abundance, creativity, and that rare emotional moment when you don’t feel like you’re running on empty. This card invites you to replenish your inner resources and allow new growth to take root.
The Chariot signifies willpower, determination, and movement forward. It inspires you to act with confidence after making conscious choices.
“Together, this trio reflects a powerful cycle: becoming aware of your choices, fueling your spirit with love and creativity, and confidently stepping forward. The Summer Solstice marks a fresh beginning: a time when everything starts to bloom, and you feel empowered to realise your most meaningful intentions.”
