German parliament revokes immunity of far-right ex-MEP with China links

The German Bundestag on Thursday revoked the immunity of controversial far-right politician Maximilian Krah as authorities intensified a corruption probe.

A spokesperson from the Dresden Public Prosecutor’s Office told POLITICO that it was investigating “a member of the German Bundestag” over money-laundering and corruption, involving payments from China.

Krah, who is a prominent figure within the Alternative for Germany party, has served as a member of the German parliament since February’s federal election. Before that he was an MEP in Brussels, where he was investigated in a China espionage probe.

According to the Dresden Public Prosecutor, the police searched offices and apartments on Thursday in Berlin, Dresden, Limbach-Oberfrohna in Saxony, as well as Brussels. Krah moved to Limbach-Oberfrohna earlier this year. He confirmed that his offices were searched.

Krah slammed the raids as an act of “intimidation” and said the case was “politically motivated.” He also called the allegations “absurd.”

Krah was considered a hard-liner within the AfD, but in recent weeks has tried to chart a more moderate course on immigration — losing support from influential hard-right activists — while seeking to appeal to German voters with migration backgrounds.
