Trump hits EU with sweeping 30 percent tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump declared a full-scale trade war with the European Union on Saturday, imposing 30 percent tariffs on the bloc.

In a letter sent to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump said: “Starting on August 1, 2025, we will charge the European Union a Tariff of only 30 percent on EU products sent into the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs.”

The president added: “If for any reason you decide to raise your Tariffs and retaliate, then, whatever the number you choose to raise them by, will be added onto the 30 percent that we charge.”

The Commission has been contacted for comment.

LP Staff Writers

Writers at Lord’s Press come from a range of professional backgrounds, including history, diplomacy, heraldry, and public administration. Many publish anonymously or under initials—a practice that reflects the publication’s long-standing emphasis on discretion and editorial objectivity. While they bring expertise in European nobility, protocol, and archival research, their role is not to opine, but to document. Their focus remains on accuracy, historical integrity, and the preservation of events and individuals whose significance might otherwise go unrecorded.
