Swedish State Visit to Canada

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden are on a State Visit to Canada from November 18-20, at the invitation of Governor General Mary Simon, to develop and strengthen the relationship between the two countries following the Canadian State Visit to Sweden in 2017, and the previous Swedish State Visits in 1988 and 2006. The King’s great-grandfather, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, was the 10th Governor General of Canada between 1911 and 1916.

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia were received by Chief Justice Richard Wagner in an Official Welcoming Ceremony at Rideau Hall, with a military guard of honour, followed by a wreath-laying at the National War Memorial, before visiting the Parliament of Canada. The Governor General is currently hospitalised so has been replaced by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, Richard Wagner.

Later, the King and Queen were received by Prime Minister Mark Carne for a bilateral meeting, that highlighted the strategic partnership established between Sweden and Canada. In the afternoon, the King and Queen visited the Canadian Museum of History, before a meeting on how Sweden and Canada can cooperate more closely within the framework of the strategic partnership to support Ukraine.

In the evening, Chief Justice Richard Wagner held a State Dinner in honour of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, at which both the King and Chief Justice gave speeches.

Writers at Lord’s Press come from a range of professional backgrounds, including history, diplomacy, heraldry, and public administration. Many publish anonymously or under initials—a practice that reflects the publication’s long-standing emphasis on discretion and editorial objectivity. While they bring expertise in European nobility, protocol, and archival research, their role is not to opine, but to document. Their focus remains on accuracy, historical integrity, and the preservation of events and individuals whose significance might otherwise go unrecorded.
