How Meghan Markle Played a Quiet Yet Powerful Role in Prince Harry’s Reunion With King Charles

Prince Harry reunited with his father, King Charles III, on Sept. 10, but he didn’t do it alone.

Details of his 53-minute meeting with his dad after a 19-month family freeze-out are now being released, and it’s being described as a “distinctly formal” affair by The Sun, instead of a warm family reunion. Still, the Duke of Sussex made it very clear to Charles where his allegiance stands with a personal gift he presented to his father.

The U.K. media outlet shared that he gave the monarch a framed snapshot of himself with Meghan and their two children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4. It was a poignant, but powerful, symbol of how dedicated Harry is to his wife and his life in California. While royal critics are so quick to comment that their marriage will never last, Harry and Meghan are proving the doubters wrong.

“We’re in love,” the Duchess of Sussex told Vanity Fair in September 2017 at the beginning of their relationship. “I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”

For every lovely word Meghan had for her husband, Harry matched her. “My wife saved me. I was stuck in this world, and she was from a different world and helped draw me out of that,” Harry said in a March 2023 livestream conversation, via Harper’s Bazaar. “But none of the elements of my life now would have been possible without me seeing it for myself.”

He continued, “My partner is an exceptional human being, and I’m eternally grateful for the wisdom and the space that she has been able to give me.”

While their royal exit was controversial, Harry and Meghan have continued to show a united front on a professional and personal level. It’s something that the palace doesn’t seem to understand, and perhaps it’s why the feud has continued to fester for so long. Harry was happy to give up is royal life in exchange for happiness. Love was greater than royal duty.

A Sussex spokesperson has since updated The Sun, stating that they “would have preferred that elements of the meeting, such as the exchange of gifts, was not revealed, for clarification purposes, gifts were exchanged and a photo from the Duke to his father was given, but it was not of him and his wife.” They didn’t reveal whether it was just a photo of the grandkids, or the entire family, or something completely different.

No matter what the gifts were, Harry is putting Meghan and his young family first.
