Why King Charles Likely Won’t See Prince Harry and His Kids During His Upcoming U.S. Trip

  • Prince Harry has reportedly expressed the desire for his father King Charles to visit California when the King is in the U.S. for a state visit in April.
  • Charles is due to visit Washington, D.C. in three months’ time, the first time he has been stateside since 2015—five years before Harry and Meghan Markle moved here in 2020.
  • Royal biographer Robert Jobson said that it is unlikely that Charles will be making the trip to Montecito, nor is it likely that the Sussex family of four will visit D.C. while the King is in town.

As news broke this week that Prince Harry will likely get his taxpayer-funded security reinstated while in the U.K.—which he lost when he ceased being a working royal in 2020—this could mean that Harry, his wife Meghan Markle, and their kids Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet could visit Harry’s home country sooner rather than later to see King Charles.

That said, when the King visits the U.S. later this year, it seems increasingly unlikely that he will see the Sussex family of four while stateside. Harry, Meghan, and their kids have lived in California, Meghan’s home state, since their step back from royal life in 2020, and Charles’s visit in April marks the first time he has been in the U.S. since 2015—five years before his younger son relocated here.

Charles and Harry last saw one another face-to-face in September, when they met for just under an hour at the King’s London home, Clarence House. The royal family—and specifically the King—have extremely regimented schedules, and royal biographer Robert Jobson wrote for Hello! that the King’s visit to Washington, D.C. in three months’ time will include “Meetings at the White House, ceremonial obligations, and official engagements” that “will be compressed into a schedule designed for maximum impact.”

But will there be a California leg of the King’s visit? No, Jobson wrote. “There will be no detour,” he asserted. Nor will Harry and family likely visit the King in D.C. for “a discreet meeting in Washington,” as “their presence would dominate headlines, eclipsing the state visit.”

“So, for that reason, it remains improbable,” Jobson said of the Sussexes seeing the King in April.

Speaking to the BBC back in May, after a ruling was handed down that Harry would not be granted security protection, Harry said he “can’t see a world” where he feels comfortable bringing Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet to the U.K. “The things that they’re going to miss is, well, everything,” he said at the time. “I miss the U.K. I miss parts of the U.K., of course I do. I think that it’s quite sad that I won’t be able to show my children my homeland.”

Since then, though, a stalking incident that occurred during Harry’s U.K. visit in September has changed the tune of the Home Office, which seems prepared to make a U-turn on its decision last year regarding Harry’s security. That said, Rebecca English of The Daily Mail reported that “while the King would never wish his younger son ill and has been ‘pained’ by the circumstances around their estrangement, he also remains ‘wary’ of welcoming him back, given the events of the past few years.”

A source told Us Weekly that the reunion between father and son took place because the King “felt the timing was right” and that their “rift needed to be addressed.”

“They needed to come to some sort of resolution and they both feel the same,” the insider said at the time, adding that the “mood was genuine and positive.”

Now in the present day, “If Harry and Meghan do return to London with Archie and Lilibet, it will be so the children can begin to forge some sort of real relationship with their grandfather, the King,” royal biographer Christopher Andersen told Us Weekly. “Charles is a huge softy when it comes to his grandkids, so I’m sure they’d be welcomed with open arms.”

A source speaking to The Sun said that “Harry has made it clear that he would love his dad to come visit him and the family. He knows that they are strained, but he has mentioned several times a hope that his father can have a relationship with his grandchildren.”

The last time that Archie and Lilibet saw their grandfather face-to-face was when they visited the U.K. for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee in June 2022—three-and-a-half years ago.
