Why Prince George Didn’t Join the Royal Family on Remembrance Sunday

At Remembrance Sunday today, the senior working royals—King Charles, Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh—all attended.

Prince William and Kate’s children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis joined the wider royal family for the 80th anniversary of VE-Day celebrations earlier this year, and George joined his mom at the Festival of Remembrance last night, leading some to speculate he would attend Remembrance Sunday.

However, Prince George did not attendance Remembrance Sunday today. This follows precedent—Prince William didn’t make his Remembrance Sunday debut until he was much older; his first time attending was in 2004, at age 22. He laid a wreath for the first time in 2007.

In May, Prince George attended his first royal tea party at Buckingham Palace, meeting World War II veterans alongside his parents.

In September, Prince William opened up about George’s future as king. “It’s an interesting question and it’s a big question that one,” William told Eugene Levy on his show The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy. “Because there’s lots of things to think about with that. But obviously, I want to create a world in which my son is proud of what we do, a world and a job that actually does impact people’s lives for the better.”

William added that change was on his agenda. “I think it’s very important that tradition stays, and tradition has a huge part in all of this but there’s also points where you look at tradition and go, ‘Is that still fit for purpose today?’” The Prince of Wales explained to Levy. “Is that still the right thing to do? Are we still doing and having the most impact we could be having? So, I like to question things is what I’m really getting at.”
