Today marks the 10th Anniversary of the Death of Princess Alexandra of Ysenburg and Büdingen, Princess Welf Henry of Hanover, who passed away on this day in 2015! The Ysenburg and Büdingen Princess and local Politician who married a Hanoverian Prince and was the aunt of the last Greek King and the Spanish Queen, wore this striking Diamond Tiara in Greece in the 1960s!
Diamond Tiara | Queen Charlotte’s Nuptial Crown
The only daughter of Prince Otto Friedrich III of Ysenburg und Büdingen zu Wächtersbach and Princess Felicitas Anna Reuss of Köstritz, Princess Alexandra married Prince Welf Henry of Hanover, the fourth son of the Duke of Brunswick and Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia, in 1960. She was the sister-in-law of Queen Frederica of Greece and thus the aunt of King Constantine II of Greece and Queen Sofia of Spain. Princess Alexandra represented the Frankfurt district of Niederrad on the Frankfurt City Council from 1980 and lastly served as the Chairwoman of the Culture and Leisure Committee.
The origin of this Diamond Tiara is not known but it may have been among the jewels of the Duchess of Brunswick or a loan from the Ysenburg und Büdingen Family.
Princess Alexandra was first seen wearing the Diamond Tiara for King Paul of Greece’s 60th Birthday Banquet at the Royal Palace of Athens in 1961.
The following year, Princess Alexandra wore the Diamond Tiara again for the Wedding Ball of Prince Juan Carlos of Spain and her niece, Princess Sophia of Greece, at the Royal Palace of Athens.
Princess Alexandra likely also wore the Diamond Tiara for the Wedding Ball of her nephew, King Constantine II of Greece, and Princess Anne Marie of Denmark in 1964 but was not pictured. The current fate of the Tiara is unknown.
