Marchioness of Carisbrooke

Today marks the 135th Anniversary of the Birth of Irene Mountbatten, Marchioness of Carisbrooke, who was born on this day in 1890! The Earl’s daughter married Queen Victoria’s grandson and was the sister-in-law of Queen Ena of Spain.

The daughter of the 2nd Earl of Londesborough and Lady Grace Fane, Lady Irene Denison married the former Prince Alexander of Battenberg, eldest son of Princess Beatrice, in 1917, two days after he relinquished his German Princely Title and a few months before being created the Marquess of Carisbrooke.

Through her marriage, the Marchioness of Carisbrooke became the sister-in-law of Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain, to whom she was quite close through years of prosperity and exile.

In addition to attending royal events, the Marchioness of Carisbrooke was quite an active figure in charity and society, succeeding her mother-in-law as President of the Frank James Memorial Hospital at East Cowes and also serving as the first president of the Women’s Automobile And Sports Association.

Lord and Lady Carisbrooke had one daughter, Lady Iris, and the Marquisate went extinct upon his death in 1960, four years after the Marchioness had passed away in 1956.

LP Staff Writers

Writers at Lord’s Press come from a range of professional backgrounds, including history, diplomacy, heraldry, and public administration. Many publish anonymously or under initials—a practice that reflects the publication’s long-standing emphasis on discretion and editorial objectivity. While they bring expertise in European nobility, protocol, and archival research, their role is not to opine, but to document. Their focus remains on accuracy, historical integrity, and the preservation of events and individuals whose significance might otherwise go unrecorded.
